Interdisciplinary Oncology

Internal oncology and haematology are part of the interdisciplinary Department of Oncology at the Gemeinschaftskrankenhaus. The ward has 27 beds.
The ward is responsible for diagnosis and interdisciplinary treatment of solid tumours as well as diseases of the blood and lymphatic organs.

Intensive communication is maintained between the departments of surgery, neurosurgery, urology and gynaecology with consultation at the patient’s bedside on the one hand, and on the other, regular, weekly case presentations and joint treatment decision-making within the framework of interdisciplinary oncology conferences.

The following cancers are treated in co-operation with the relevant surgery departments:

  • Breast cancer, cancer of the female and male genitals (ovarian, cervical uterine, testicular and prostate carcinoma ).
  • Lung tumours (bronchial carcinoma, mesothelioma).
  • Oesophageal and gastrointestinal tumours (stomach, colon colorectal carcinoma including gastrointestinal stromal carcinoma - GIST).
  • Pancreatic carcinoma, gallbladder and bile duct carcinoma, kidney and urninary tract cancer (e.g. hypernephroma and urothelial carcinoma).
  • Brain tumours (treated in co-operation with the Department of Neurosurgery).
  • Malignant lymphoma, plasmocytoma and chronic leukaemia.

We employ modern endoscopic and ultrasound techniques, computer tomography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for diagnosis. Ultrasound or computer-tomographically guided fine needle puncture (i.e. biopsies) are also carried out where appropriate. Cytological diagnostics of bone marrow and puncture fluids (e.g. cerebrospinal, pleural, ascites) are conducted on site, in the department.
